The annual downtown bicycle counts have increased by more than 15 per cent from 2022 to 2024 (based on six downtown core counters).
The active transportation network's usage increased by 7 per cent from 2022 to 2024. Rider traffic during the colder months from October to March increased significantly by 43 per cent from 2022 to 2024.
At present, data is being collected at 49 eco-counter monitoring locations along various types of active modes facilities across the city. The eco-counter data is available publicly, with recent counts between 2022 and 2025 shown. The City is also working on a more user-friendly, public-facing source that more clearly shows the ridership data across infrastructure and mode types. This is a work in progress and will be released when complete.
Since 2016, approximately 50 kilometres of bike routes have been constructed through neighbourhood and arterial roadway renewal programs. This includes the construction of the southside bike network, which was implemented through the Strathcona and Garneau neighbourhood renewal projects.
There are 10.5 kilometres of bike routes in downtown Edmonton. Of this, 4.5 kilometres are protected bike lanes on the roadway. The remaining routes are either shared with pedestrians (shared pathways) or shared with cars (shared roadways or painted bike lanes).
As part of the Active Transportation Network Expansion Program, to fully understand the impact, the project team has captured pre-implementation counts for the planned routes in addition to available eco-counter data. Post-implementation usage counts of the expanded active transportation network will also be conducted. This is intended to help showcase that expanding the network with safe and reliable infrastructure will encourage usage.
THIRD PARTY VALIDATION: DATA FROM LIME BIKE AND SCOOTERS
Ridership increased substantially over 2024, when the season started later, and represents a 17% rise compared to the same period in 2023.
We're especially encouraged by the surge in e-bike usage, which is up 164% in April–May 2025 compared to the same months in 2023.
Oilers game days continue to drive ridership spikes, with daily trips up 9% and vehicle utilization increasing by 11%. Notably, home games lead to a 25% higher ridership compared to away games.
