City Council can't lower student rent, or tuition, or the cost of textbooks, but we can help improve student well-being by allowing students more access to recreation at a free or reduced cost.
The Leisure Access Program (LAP) allows eligible low income Edmontonians access to the City of Edmonton recreation facilities and attractions at a free or reduced cost.
But here’s the catch… Full-time students are NOT eligible to qualify.
This is a mistake. And a missed opportunity.
Students need recreation opportunities too. They are critical to improving mental health and well-being. The campus facilities are excellent, but if someone wants to explore Edmonton, this would enable more opportunities to do so. This should be enabled as a way to boost our student attraction, tourism, and the retention of student talent post-graduation.
Go to the Zoo. Visit a golf course. Crash in the wave pool. Love where you live!
This is amazing free marketing and advertising as more young adults take a date and post a cute selfie at the muttart or go to one of our amazing outdoor swimming pools or indoor wave pools. When people love their city, they stay in their city.
Please help sign my petition to advance student recreation.
Sign our letter tool to send a message to the Mayor and City Council that you would like to see students considered. I will send you updates when this matter comes forward to a vote at City Council and you can raise your voice in support.
