Michael, my name is Milana Rai, I have 3 children in schools in your ward; two in George Luck school and one in Riverbend Junior high. I am writing to you today to ask you to be an advocate for our children during this pandemic. I am increasingly concerned with the lack of physical activity in our schools. The pandemic is being used as an excuse to treat our children as inmates rather than students. The last week with the plummeting temperatures really underscored the need for me to contact you. The current health measures is place are unjustifiably cruel to our children. My son in grade 7 and my daughters in grade 5 sat in one spot the ENTIRE day from 8:30 to 3:30. This happened in both schools and for the entire week. They are not allowed to get up to stretch, they are not free to move about in the classroom and they are not allowed to interact with other students. Your website mentions that you have a young son. Is this what you envision for your son’s health and education? My children are physically drained from sitting in one position for hours. Not only is it unhealthy, it’s inhumane! By contrast, my nephews who are in Vimmy Ridge school are somehow safely able to enjoy various options, physical activity and are able to interact with their friends at recess. How is there such a disparity in school experience between the two schools?

You have been a vocal advocate in support of covid measures, lockdowns etc, you now need to advocate for our students. They are the reason the schools are here and they are the reason you and the teachers do what you do. There is more to health than this virus and my heart breaks for my children. How are the school principles in your ward allowed to limit children’s mobility to such an extent? Why can’t they have “body breaks” to get up and stretch or go for a walk in the hallway. These are children! It seems everyone has forgotten them in their determination to stop the spread of this virus. I am asking you to investigate the “health measures” in place in George Luck and Riverbend schools.
